Artist Statement and Care Instructions

Artist Statement

My work is inspired by the environments that I see around me while out running & walking. Travelling on foot through the landscape allows a greater appreciation of the colours, contours and textures of the environment around us, and gives us the opportunity to see aspects of the landscape not often noticed in the usual rush and chaos of day-to-day life.

Each piece evolves from an aspect of a run that catches my attention, from flat slate pebbles on a beach that slide sideways when stepped on, or a footpath disappearing down a lichen-rich tree tunnel, to being surrounded by the vibrant colours and noises of a large road race like the London Marathon.

I use silver wire to form an appropriate shape for a piece, and then hand stitch over part or all of it with silk threads, occasionally using other materials, such as pearls or glass beads, to add the colour and texture relevant to the run I am trying to portray.

Increasingly I am working with objects that I find on my travels on foot, things that have signs of a previous use & history to them, to incorporate with stitch into my jewellery.

Although my work involves time consuming processes, it does mean that I am constantly reminded of my favourite places to run & walk while I work!

I graduated in 2008 from the University of Hertfordshire with a BA in Applied Arts
